Do You Actually Own Your Business Website?

Paying someone to build a website does not automatically mean you control every part of it. Here's what to check about your domain, files, accounts and handover before signing up.

A website is made up of several different things

When someone says they own a website, they might mean several different things: the domain name, the design and files, the hosting account or the logins used to make changes. These are connected, but they are not identical.

You can pay for a beautiful site and still find that the domain was registered under someone else's account. You might own the design but have no practical way to move it. The important question is not only who built the website; it is what you will control once the work is finished.

You should be able to get simple answers in writing before paying.

Start with the domain name and business email

Your domain is the address customers use to find you, such as yourbusiness.co.uk. Check which account holds the registration, who is named as the registrant where applicable and who can renew it. Losing control of the domain can disrupt the website and email at the same time.

Business email may be managed through a separate provider. If you use email addresses on your domain, check who controls those accounts and the DNS settings that tell the internet where your email should go.

It is reasonable for an agency to help set everything up. It is not reasonable for the business owner to be left with no information about where those services live or how to manage them.

Ask what happens to the website files when you leave

Some website-building services are tightly connected to their own platform. Moving away can mean rebuilding parts of the site. A custom-built website may offer different options, but its portability still depends on how it was developed and what rights are included in the agreement.

Before signing, ask whether the provider will hand over the agreed site files or source code, what third-party assets or licences are involved and whether another developer can take over future changes.

A straightforward handover should tell you where the site is hosted, how to access it, what has been delivered and which services still need renewing. Keep that information somewhere secure.

Does owning the site mean you get free hosting?

No. Hosting is the service that makes your website available online. Even when the website files and agreed rights are yours, you may still pay a hosting company, domain registrar or email provider. Ownership and ongoing service costs should be discussed separately.

What does a sensible handover look like?

The client does not need to become a developer. They do need a clear record of the essentials and to know whom to contact if something needs changing.

For instance, if you want a different company to update the contact details in six months, that company should be able to identify the website, the hosting arrangement and the relevant access without starting from scratch.

  • Domain registrar details and renewal responsibility.
  • Hosting provider, billing responsibility and required access.
  • Agreed website files, rights and any third-party licences.
  • A list of current integrations such as contact forms or business email.
  • An explanation of how future updates and support work.

How SANTRIL approaches ownership

SANTRIL Website Launch is designed around a fixed website scope, source code and deployment handover, rather than requiring the customer to remain on a compulsory agency subscription. The published offer also distinguishes the one-off build from optional ongoing Website Care.

That does not mean every external cost disappears. Domain renewals, email subscriptions and other third-party services remain separate. The details and agreed handover should be checked against the current package terms.

A business website should become a practical asset for the owner, not a mystery that only its original developer understands.

Want a website without an unnecessary agency tie-in?

SANTRIL Website Launch is built around a defined scope, clear handover and no compulsory monthly agency contract. Read the current terms to understand what you receive and what remains separately chargeable.
